Designing a commissioned abstract painting for a living room

When creating a commissioned abstract painting, I approach it not as a standalone artwork, but as part of the interior itself. This particular piece was designed specifically for a living room—a space meant for gathering, resting, and breathing—and every decision I made was guided by the atmosphere the room needed to hold.

Before putting brush to canvas, I spent time researching the interior: the color palette of the house, the furniture, and the surrounding elements. Rather than copying the room directly, I translated its colors into subtle highlights within the painting. Dark blue and gold appear in small, intentional moments, echoing select pieces of furniture and decorative accents already present in the space. These touches help the artwork feel connected without overwhelming the room.

Greens played an equally important role. The living room features plants that bring life and softness into the environment, so incorporating green tones allowed the painting to visually balance with the natural elements. This connection helps blur the boundary between art and interior, making the space feel cohesive and considered.
Because the painting was created for a living room, calm was essential. I focused on flow, softness, and balance—avoiding harsh contrasts or aggressive movement. The goal was to support a peaceful atmosphere, one where the artwork enhances the room’s energy rather than competing with it.
This project reflects my belief that commissioned abstract art works best when it responds to its environment. When colors, textures, and mood are thoughtfully aligned with the interior, the painting doesn’t just decorate the space—it becomes part of how the room feels to live in.
Let’s create a custom piece infused with color, emotion, and meaning.
