Saint Rita

This acrylic painting, Saint Rita, is my attempt to reinterpret the visual language of medieval portraiture through a contemporary medium. I was inspired by how medieval portraits were not meant to be realistic likenesses, but symbolic representations of spiritual identity, devotion, and moral character.

In this work, I focused on creating a sense of stillness and reverence. The frontal pose, simplified anatomy, and restrained expression are deliberate choices that echo medieval icons and devotional panels. Rather than emphasizing depth or naturalistic perspective, I aimed for a flat, composed surface that draws attention to the figure’s presence and spiritual weight.

The color palette is limited and muted, referencing the earth tones and subdued pigments commonly found in medieval painting. I used acrylic paint in thin layers to imitate the matte, almost tempera-like finish of older works, while still allowing subtle texture to remain visible. This balance between smoothness and imperfection helps maintain a handmade, timeless quality.

Saint Rita herself is represented less as an individual portrait and more as a symbolic figure. Her expression is calm and introspective, encouraging contemplation rather than emotional drama. The lack of excessive detail is intentional, allowing the viewer to focus on her spiritual significance rather than physical realism.

Overall, this painting explores how medieval aesthetics can be translated into modern materials. Through Saint Rita, I wanted to create a work that feels quiet, devotional, and reflective, while acknowledging the historical roots of portrait painting.
